How to Cleanse Crystals: 5 Safe Methods (and What to Avoid)

Moonlight, smoke, sound, selenite and water — the five safest ways to cleanse your crystals, plus which stones must stay dry.

Crystals absorb energy — that is their job. Cleansing resets the stone so it works with your intention rather than yesterday’s noise. Here are the five methods we recommend in our studio, and the mistakes to avoid.

1. Moonlight (the all-rounder)

Leave crystals on a windowsill overnight during a full moon. Safe for every stone, and the gentlest method there is.

2. Smoke

Pass the stone through the smoke of sage, palo santo or incense for 30 seconds while setting your intention to clear it.

3. Sound

A singing bowl or bell near your stones shifts their vibration. Ideal for crystal collections you do not want to move.

4. Selenite plates

Selenite is one of the few crystals believed to cleanse other stones. Rest jewelry on a selenite plate or bowl between wears.

5. Brief water rinse — for hard stones only

Quartz-family stones (amethyst, clear quartz, rose quartz, citrine) tolerate a quick rinse under running water. Dry thoroughly.

What to avoid

  • Salt water — corrosive to soft and porous stones
  • Prolonged direct sunlight — fades amethyst and rose quartz
  • Water with selenite, malachite or any soft stone — they can dissolve or damage

A monthly cleanse is plenty for most pieces; cleanse more often if the stone is used daily for emotional work.
